California's State Bar Rules permit participatory and self-study mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) activities to be delivered by electronic means including streaming audio and video, web conferences and podcasts. A vast number of free CLE programs are available on line, in a variety of popular subjects, including corporate, environmental, intellectual property, litigation, international and technology law, as well as the required areas of legal ethics, elimination of bias, and detection and prevention of substance abuse. Although not catalogued here, such programs can easily be found via a simple web search. Complimentary on-line programs are, for example, offered by many law firms, vendors, bar associations, legal service providers, and law schools. In addition, some commercial CLE providers will occasionally offer programs for free. California attorneys are required to maintain a personal written log of their self-study activities. State Bar record-keeping requirements can be found here and a sample MCLE log form is available here.
